What do North Carolinians think about marijuana legalization?
This January Elon University polled 1,455 North Carolina citizens in order to gage their support for cannabis legalization both medically and recreationally. Here are some of the details:
Cannabis legalization for adult use (recreational):
54% of residents support
34% oppose
12% unsure
Cannabis legalization for medical use:
73% of residents support
18% oppose
The last time Elon University did a poll on this topic was in 2017 and they found this year’s poll to yield very different results. In 2017, the poll found that 51% of residents opposed the legalization of recreational cannabis. This rate dropped to 34% in 2020 showing almost double the support! Surprisingly though, support for legalization of medical cannabis dropped by 5% from 2017 to 2020.
The poll also noted:
Cannabis decriminalization
67% of residents support
20% oppose
13% unsure
The poll also revealed that 64% of North Carolina residents believe that legalization of cannabis would help the state’s economy and 45% believe that crime would decrease if cannabis were legalized.
It was found as well that there is a generational gap when it comes to the support of legalization for recreational cannabis. Those under 44 were nearly twice as likely to support legalization than those 65 and older. Surprisingly this gap doesn’t persist when it comes to medical marijuana support or decriminalization!
