Medical Marijuana Coming to Tribal Lands in North Carolina

The State of North Carolina does not currently have a medical marijuana program, however, its Cherokee tribe does.

The Cherokee tribe is its own sovereign nation with its own laws and governments. The tribe is completely independent from the State of North Carolina, which is why it was able to legalize medical marijuana.

The tribe made the decision last year to begin cultivation, sale, and use of medical marijuana on tribal land. They made this decision due to the numerous studies and plentiful evidence that marijuana has many medicinal benefits.

Benefits of Cherokee Medical Marijuana Program

The medical marijuana program will benefit the Cherokee tribe in many ways, including creating employment opportunities for many people within the community. Once the program is fully operational, they estimate that they will need about 500 employees.

The tribe expects to open their first dispensary in 2023. The tribe also has their own EBCI Cannabis Board which will regulate the dispensaries on their land by issuing medical cards.

Program Rules

In order to get your medical marijuana card on Cherokee land, you need to be at least 21 years old. Non-tribal members will also be able to purchase from their dispensaries as long as they meet their requirements.

Patients may purchase up to one ounce of cannabis per day, but no more than six ounces per month. The tribal land dispensary will have flower, pre-rolls, edibles, concentrates, and topicals.
